The Green Album

Did you know that 2006 is the 50th anniversary of Gumby? To honor the green guy's birthday, here's a tribute album to him from 1989. All but three of the songs are newly written for this album. Two of them are cover songs that sort of tie in with the theme ("Bend Me, Shape Me" and "Concrete and Clay") and one is a cover of Gumby's theme song sung by Frank Sinatra Jr. in the style of his old man, the Chairman of the Board himself! This is a neat album with a variety of talent involved. Here's the track list:

1. (In Love) With You Gumby - Dweezil & Moon Unit Zappa
2. Concrete and Clay - Eddie Wade
3. Zydeco Gumby Ya Ya - Brave Combo
4. Bend Me, Shape Me - Donna McElroy
5. Gumby, We Love You - Sly and Robbie
6. I Like Gumby - Jonathan Richman
7. Pokey's Polka - Brave Combo
8. The Ballad of Gumby - Rick Schulman
9. We All Are Gumby - Flo and Eddie
10. The Gumby Heart Song (Original TV Theme) - Frank Sinatra Jr.

Wayout

Well, everybody else was getting into this blogging thing, and I figured I had enough oddball stuff of my own to get involved.

As you may have guessed, I got the name for this blog from the first item I'm sharing. This is a set of eight different commercials from an organization I know very little about except:
  • They sent out pamphlets and a magazine at no charge ("Like love, it's free") geared to teens on subjects like suicide, VD and other sexual matters, and getting along with parents.
  • They had locations in Canada (Vancouver 3, BC) and California.
  • They had enough pull to get endorsements from Johnny Cash and Dorsey Burnette.

I don't remember when or how we got this record. I think a radio station might have given it to us. These commercials seemed to have been done sometime in the early '70s. (Johnny Cash's song "What Is Truth" from 1970 plays in the background on his spot.)

I was going to go into a blow-by-blow description of what's here, but the best thing to tell you is to download and discover it for yourself. You may even find some fun stuff to add to your mixtapes. The download includes the front and back cover of the record. Now this was my first upload to Rapidshare, so let me know if you have any problems with it.

And by the way, if you have any other info about this organization, please pass it along. I'd be interested in knowing more!

Here's the list of commercials:
  1. You've Got What?
  2. Turn the Music Down
  3. Let's Get With It
  4. Word Association Game
  5. Why Go On?
  6. Hello, I'm Johnny Cash
  7. How the Bad Bug Bites (with Dorsey Burnette)
  8. Want Me to Steal It?
