Here's another odd one for you. Do you remember "The Krofft Supershow"? Well, the hosts of the show were a group called "Kaptain Kool and the Kongs". When I bought this record from eBay (still sealed), I was hoping it was going to be songs from the group. Actually, it's a couple of skits from them, as well as audio recordings of stories from episodes (with minimal narration). Unfortunately this was a bit later in the show's run so, while we still get a Wonderbug story, there's no Dr. Shrinker or Electra Woman and Dyna Girl tales. Instead, we get Magic Mongo (oog!) and Big Foot and Wild Boy. It's funny, but with the amateurish recording and grainy, out-of-focus picture, you'd almost think this album was a bootleg, but it's got the Peter Pan Records logo on it, so it must be legit. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it!Here's the track list (such as it is):
- Turkey Jokes
- The Adventures of Magic Mongo
- The Adventures of Wonderbug and His Friends
- Turkey Jokes
- The Adventures of Big Foot and Wild Boy
Awesome. I loved this show back then. Had a crush on (what did they call her?) Super Chick, too.
ReplyDeleteMemories...
There was an old drug store in my neighborhood that had a jigsaw puzzle of Kaptain K & the Ks. In fact, I think it is the exact same photo as used for this LP cover.
ReplyDeleteThe thing is, I always thought that guy in the back row looked like Jerry Seinfeld with extra groovy hair.
FWIW.
Hi, Tony!
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I do have the album of the songs they sang. Will be glad to upload it for anyone who wants it. Love your site!

Hi Esther!
ReplyDeleteWell, if nobody else will request it, I certainly will! If you would upload that album I would appreciate it (and I'll even put a link to it on my blog entry).
Thanks!
Tony
Way Out Junk
Have you ever noticed that all of these "groups" are made up of the same teen types?
ReplyDeleteThere is always one cool guy, a pretty (popular) girl, the not pretty , kid sister type girl, and the tall, goofy, also asexual, guy.
This never seems to be the "band" make up. Yet in "real" life would these kids ever hang with each other?
It's funny, but with the amateurish recording and grainy, out-of-focus picture, you'd almost think this album was a bootleg, but it's got the Peter Pan Records logo on it, so it must be legit.
ReplyDeleteActually, amateurish recording and grainy, out-of-focus pictures seem like hallmarks of most things associated with the Krofft brothers! Thanks for the upload, it brings back fun memories like many of the neat things you've posted on your blog.
Hi, Tony!
ReplyDeleteWell, I finally got around to posting my Kaptain Kool & the Kongs album (where they sing songs), so be sure to stop by and check it out!

I asked my wife recently if she remebered captain cool and the kongs..she gave me a look like i was tripping and joking with her-making something up.
ReplyDeleteIts good to see that I wasn't the only kid watching this show.
The theme song is still in my head, anybody know where I can hear the them song?
When I saw this cover, I immediately thought of "Godspell" for some weird reason.
ReplyDeleteI loved Kaptain Kool & The Kongs, and especially Debra Clinger as "Super Chick."
ReplyDeleteI originally bought this record a number of years ago, assuming and hoping it would contain some of the great songs they did on the show.
Disapointed doesn't nearly cover what I felt when I head this crap intead!!
Why wouldn't the Krofft brothers sell something decent? The fact that they have made some of these episodes available on DVD san Kool & the Kongs shows how lame they are!!
This takes me way back, thanks for the far out trip down memory lane..Peace and Love
ReplyDeleteThanks for the Kaptain Kool and Kongs album.
ReplyDeleteWas one of my favourite shows!
Debra "Super Chick" Clinger was a member of the Clinger Sisters. Her sibling, Peggy, was the singing voice of Kitty Jo in THE CATTANOOGA CATS (H-B series from 1969, and on the LP produced by Mike Curb). Peggy also wrote the song "Half Breed," which became a hit for Cher.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting all these great novelty records!
