It's Contest Time! [CONTEST IS OVER]

Presenting "The Twelve Days of Way Out Junk-mas" Contest!

Here's the deal:

At the end of this entry you will find a file. Download and listen to the file. What you will hear is the last verse of the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas". However, the intro and each one of the numbered gifts is from a different version of the song (or a parody of it). Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to tell me the artists of each of these parts. Now I'm looking for the artist, group, or characters credited on the song. For example, if one piece has Moe from the Three Stooges, just saying the Three Stooges is fine. If Bugs Bunny sings one, you'd say Bugs Bunny, not Mel Blanc. When you have your guess ready, email it to me at wayoutjunk@gmail.com (Do NOT send it as a comment on the board! Email only!! In fact, to alleviate anybody getting overly excited on the guessing, I will set the comments to be moderated by me just in case.) Please make as the subject "Twelve Days Contest" or something similar to that, so I'll know that's what the email is about. You'll have to guess who does the Intro all the way down to number one (and when you enter, please number and answer them in that order). And whoever gets the most answers right without going over wins the prize! (Sorry, I went into Bob Barker mode there for a second. Hey, he's retiring, so maybe I can get his job! "Help control the population. Have your kids spayed or neutered." No, wait. That's not right.....)

What will the winner receive? A copy of all the music currently available on this site in handy-dandy mp3 form, and maybe a few musical surprises as well! I think you guys should be able to get at least half of these without breaking a sweat. That said, I really don't believe anybody here will get every one of them. However, you're a pretty sharp group so you may surprise me. (I know the question you all have: Will the files that have been recently removed be included on the CDs? My official answer is No. Interpret that however you choose.)

OK, here's the rules. If you're entering, please read them:

1. Entering the contest means you have read, understood, and will abide by these rules.
   
2. The entrant will email their guess to me (numbering them from Intro to 12 and all the way down to 1). Make sure to also supply your name, your username on this board if you have one, and your city and state (and country if you're outside the U.S.). The winning entrant will be the one with the most correct answers. In case of a tie, a random drawing will be held to determine the winner. Remember there will be 13 answers here. Don't forget the Intro!
   
3. Entries must be received by 11:59 Central Time on Saturday, December 16th.
   
4. I will not be held responsible for computer or internet screw-ups.
   
5. The winner will be sent copies of all music currently available on this site (as of 11/21/06) in mp3 form on however many CDs it ends up being. If winner lives outside the Continental U.S. they may be asked to help with postage, depending on how much the CDs cost to send.
   
6. Please read this one very carefully. The winner is welcome to give away or trade any of the contents on these CDs through snail mail or in person. However, the winner agrees NOT TO SELL any of the contents in any way, shape, or form.
   
7. Void where prohibited. I'm not exactly sure where that would be, but all contest rules seem to put that in, and who am I to buck tradition?

Hear Santa Coming to Your House! (if your name is Jennifer, that is...)

I know absolutely nothing about this record. Even the label (if it had one) is gone. It's one of those records that you would buy that would mention your child's name, but boy howdy they didn't go to much expense or trouble here. You hear Santa Ho-Ho-Ho-ing and talking about Christmas and how wonderful everything is while he's making his rounds. Then he asks whose chimney he's come to, and some lady that they probably just grabbed out of the office says, "Jennifer's chimney, Santa Claus." Then Santa replies, "Oh yes, Merry Christmas to you!" and goes on Ho-Ho-Ho-ing and wishing you a Merry Christmas again. And that's it! First of all, I didn't think Santa took on elves as riders on his annual trip. Secondly, isn't Santa supposed to know which house he's come to, without having some unimpressed elf telling him? I think I would know i got ripped off even if I was little Jennifer! Anyway, I figured you guys would appreciate the pure cheesiness of it, despite the fact that it's not in best shape. Enjoy!

Children's Treasury of Superman Musical Stories

I just had to share this album with you, especially since it ties in so well with yesterday's entry. This album from 1966 features a bunch of fun songs about Superman and his cast of characters. There's two each for Superman, Lois, Jimmy, Superboy, Krypto, and Mr. Mxyptlk. What's fun is that a lot of these songs are supposedly sung by the characters themselves. For example, in the song "Lois Lane", the singer says, "I'll do it, I'll do it, I'll keep her in line even if it means changing her name to mine or my name isn't Superman!" And if you were hoping for a definitive pronunciation of the name Mxyptlk, you won't get it here. When Mxyptlk himself says it, it sounds like a cross between a chicken and the Tasmanian Devil! By the way, I've heard that there's supposedly another album of this vintage of Justice League songs. I've seen one from the 70's but not this one. Anybody here heard of it?

It's Superman! (sort of...)

A company called Onar Films is supposed to be putting this movie out on DVD later this year. Unfortunately all their stuff is in PAL format, so it wouldn't work here in the United States. I hope you enjoy this little snippet of it!

Zero Mostel Reads "How the Grinch Stole Christmas"

Hey, it's my first Christmas album for the blog! I don't have a whole lot of Christmas albums that aren't either still in print or available elsewhere, so I'm going to have to spread them out a bit.

This is a pretty neat album from 1975. Side 1 is Zero Mostel reading "How the Grinch Stole Christmas". Mostel starts out pretty calm, but after a while he just goes nuts! I think this is the first Grinch I've heard that just sounds out-and-out insane!! Side 2 is a number of Christmas songs from around the world (sung in English) by a man named Alan Mills. I don't know him, but he has a definite Burl Ives-ish quality about him. I hope you guys like this!

Kaptain Kool and the Kongs

Here's another odd one for you. Do you remember "The Krofft Supershow"? Well, the hosts of the show were a group called "Kaptain Kool and the Kongs". When I bought this record from eBay (still sealed), I was hoping it was going to be songs from the group. Actually, it's a couple of skits from them, as well as audio recordings of stories from episodes (with minimal narration). Unfortunately this was a bit later in the show's run so, while we still get a Wonderbug story, there's no Dr. Shrinker or Electra Woman and Dyna Girl tales. Instead, we get Magic Mongo (oog!) and Big Foot and Wild Boy. It's funny, but with the amateurish recording and grainy, out-of-focus picture, you'd almost think this album was a bootleg, but it's got the Peter Pan Records logo on it, so it must be legit. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it!

Since the movie E.T. used to be shown on TV during Thanksgiving, I thought this would be a good time to throw this onto the blog. This record contains a number of cheesy songs related to E.T. as sung by the Starlight Children's Chorus. Thanksgiving Songs That Tickle Your Funny Bone

Hi! Here's a fun little Thanksgiving record from 1975 that I got at the Library's book sale. This has lots of traditional songs with the words changed to make them Thanksgiving related. ("It's Thanksgiving" to "O Susannah", "I'm a Poor Little Cranberry Bush" to "In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree", etc.) Yeah, it's pretty silly, but how many Thanksgiving kids records ARE there?? Hope you like it, and (if all goes well and the creeks don't rise) the Contest will begin either late tonight or tomorrow!

The Talking Record for Girls

I'm not sure if this is useful or kind of creepy. This record was meant to be played by little girls to assist them in "thinking and speaking". It starts out with a friendly woman's voice saying, "Hello, I'm Rosemary, your talking record." and she goes on by asking questions and leaving spaces in between for the child to answer. I'm not quite sure when this record came out, but judging by the pictures I'm guessing possibly late 50's-early 60's. Therefore there's a lot of talk asking about how many dolls the child has and which one's her favorite. Rosemary also throws in a few poems and songs to liven things up a bit. I read there's a "Talking Record for Boys" as well. I assume they talk about playing Cowboys and Indians and collecting Army Men or something. Anyway, hope you like this!

Shari Lewis: Hi Kids!

Well, kids, let's soldier on and hope for the best...

This album from 1959 or 1960 (depending on whether you believe the album cover or the record itself) features famed ventriloquist Shari Lewis and her puppets Lamb Chop, Charley Horse, Hush Puppy, and Wing Ding singing a number of fun songs. Now the disadvantage of having a ventriloquist do an album is that without the visual of the puppets you start to notice similarities in the voices. The advantage, of course, is that you can have everybody singing at the same time! One good thing here is that Lewis really does have a nice singing voice. She can really swing through some of these songs! One bad thing is the rather un-PC "All God's Chillun Got Rhythm". Anyway, this is a neat album, and I hope it stays here long enough for you to enjoy it!

Oh yeah, quick trivia tidbit: Did you know that Shari Lewis (along with her husband) actually wrote the Classic Star Trek episode "The Lights of Zetar"?

James Blonde: The Man from T.A.N.T.E.

Well, I'd hoped to get this one on to coincide with the opening of "Casino Royale", but I'm a bit late on it. Since a number of articles were referring to Daniel Craig as "James Blonde", I figured this would be a perfect fit!

My Dad bought this for us when we were kids. I'm not really sure why because it's not really a kids record. This album (copyrighted 1965 but I know we got it a few years later) has James Bond (excuse me, Blonde) as the Man from T.A.N.T.E. (To Annihilate No-good Troublemakers Etc.) going up against Dr. Nu? and Goldflaker from T.R.A.F.E. (Terrible Rotten And Filthy Enemies). This comedy album is loaded with Jewish references, which might temper how many of the jokes you get. As I kid, I just liked the funny voices. As a number of articles talking about this record point out, this album cast M as a woman long before the movies did. However, in this case M stands for James Blonde's Mama who insists on calling him Jake. ("You may be James to the world, sonny boy, but to your mother you will always be Jake!") This definitely qualifies as Way Out Junk! I hope you enjoy it, and for those of you who want more kids albums, don't worry. I've got three or four of them I'm working on right now!

"Welcome to the LBJ Ranch!" : The Robin-Doud Comedy Interviews

I actually like this one better than "Washington Is for the Birds". Instead of putting their voices to song (which, while funny, is a bit forced), this album does fake interviews using the politicians' real voices. Sort of like what Dickie Goodman did in songs like "The Flying Saucer", where he took pieces of popular songs and put them in an interview format with humorous results. Even if you aren't familiar with the politicians and what they did, this is very funny. And if you don't like it, in the words of Lady Bird Johnson, "That's all right."

Washington Is for the Birds

Considering Election Day is Tuesday, I thought I'd throw a few political albums on here for you. But this being Way Out Junk, you can count on it not getting too deep. This album from 1966 features the voices of then President Lyndon Johnson, his wife Lady Bird, Vice President Hubert Humphrey, and a number of other political figures of the day. The catch here is that their voices are set to music. We're not talking about stirring patriotic music behind inspirational speeches. No, we've got sound bites that are somehow made into songs. It's terribly silly, but would you expect anything less from me?

Groovie Goolies Rarities (A Very Special Contribution)

This is a bit of a late Halloween gift to you guys, but hopefully I will be forgiven under the circumstances. Remember a few posts ago when I said I was in a good mood because I got back in touch with a friend of mine that I hadn't heard from in a while? Well, that friend happens to be Mondo Daddykin, late of the Mondo Daddykin blog (a huge inspiration for the blog you see here)! (By the way, he's doing fine. He's just happy to be away from blogging for a while. He said he might throw occasional projects together that he'll pass along to me. This album from 1983 is described as "a monstery approach to preschool and primary skills". I think that would qualify it as a Halloween-ish entry, don't you? This is kind of a poor man's Sesame Street, but it's still kinda cute. Hope you like it!

Panic: The Son of Shock

This odd record from 1959 was a sequel to the album "Shock". I don't have that one, but I was going to find somebody that did and link to it here. Unfortunately the couple of places that showed having it are no longer available. If anybody has a working link for it, please let me know and I'll add that link here.

Anyway, this album from the Creed Taylor Orchestra features strange instrumental bits (some with a little talking as well) of some unusual and scary situations. The back cover has a story for each song, so I've included a copy of the back cover above (as well as on the uploaded zip file) to give you a bit of an idea on what's going on here. I apologize that the back cover didn't really print well here. If you click on the picture it gets bigger, and (with Firefox at least) a magnifying glass comes up that blows it up even bigger. I really don't know what else to tell you here, other than to download it and enjoy, remembering that the name of this blog is "Way Out Stuff" and I think this fits the bill!

The Smurfs All Star Show

I wasn't sure I had this other Smurf album from 1981, but it turns out that I do! I think I bought it at a later date, because I didn't remember listening to this one. I don't like this one quite as much as "Smurfing Sing Song" because they use more traditional songs here. It's still pretty neat if you want to get your Smurf on though! Hope you like it!

Flipper's New Adventure

This record was released shortly after the movie came out in 1964 and is a sort of retelling of the movie itself. It stars Luke Halpin as Sandy, who also played the part in the movie and the subsequent series that came out that fall. However, none of the other roles are played by the original cast. Most of the roles are played by the Speed Racer voice artists, as well as Jackson Beck and Dick Van Patten. As far as Flipper himself, I don't think he bothered to come to the studio because they use variations of the same two second clip of him chattering all through the record!

One neat thing is that this is part of the Stereo Motion series of children's stories, which means that according to the back album cover, "you can hear Flipper splash and chatter as he swims from wave to wave. You can also hear airplanes pass overhead, and motor boats roar from left to right." It ain't as cool as Dolby Surround, but hey, it's not bad for 1964! Enjoy!

Fun for Everyday with Little Johnny Everything and His Sister Judy

Here's an odd little album from 1958 that I picked up at the Library's book sale. You know, your kid's destined to be spoiled if you call him Little Johnny Everything. Although apparently his sister is named Judy Everything. What nationality would the surname "Everything" be?

Anyway, here's some cute kids songs that I don't think I've heard anywhere else (except for the song "My How You've Grown" that I'm pretty sure I saw puppets performing to on "Captain Kangaroo"). There's even a couple of Christmas songs that you can hold off listening to for a couple months if you feel like it. Enjoy!
