Batman Theme by the Bat Boys

Once the Batman TV show hit it big, it seemed like you couldn't turn around without finding yet another record album trying to cash in on it. Here's one from a group called the Bat Boys. It's nowhere near as good as this album, but it's got some fun kind of jazzy music that you might like.

A little story about this record: I've had this one for a while. (It was probably handed down to me from one of my brothers or maybe I got it at a garage sale a long time ago.) I don't ever remember having an album cover for it though. Fast forward to many years later. I bought an album of Batman stories from eBay. It arrives and unfortunately it doesn't have the correct record inside. Guess which one is in there instead? Yep, this one again! So I figured that was a sign that I needed to put this album out here for you guys. So I hope you like it!

(By the way, I still don't have the real album cover to this one. I had to find a picture online of it. I don't think I put the picture in the zip file, so if you want it you'll have to save it separately.)

HB Musical Songfest

Here's a neat little record from 1961 performed by the Jimmy Carroll Orchestra and the Golden Tones. In it, the established characters of Quick Draw McGraw, Huckleberry Hound, and Yogi Bear introduce songs sung by (or about) the lesser-known characters of Snuffles, Hokey Wolf and Ding-a-Ling, and Cindy Bear respectively. Once again we don't have the real voice artists (which in this case, would be almost all Daws Butler), but it's fun anyway. For some reason though, the lady doing Cindy's singing voice sounds kind of like Olive Oyl with a Southern accent! Anyway, hope you enjoy this!

Come On and Zoom [LINK FIXED!]

How many of you remember "Zoom"? This show was known for its interactivity with its audience. In fact, many of the skits and craft projects were sent in by kids in hopes of seeing their ideas on TV. Zoom had a rotating cast, so I don't know if I remember everybody in this picture. I think the boy at the top left was Danny, and the chubby boy to the far right was Mike. The Asian girl in the next row was Bernadette (she of the magic twirling arms). I think David is next to her. I believe the black boy is Leon. The girl to his right is Maura, and Jay is on the bottom row in the middle. Not bad considering I probably haven't seen this show in over 20 years! Anyhow, if you watched the show very often, you'll know a lot of these songs, including the Fannee Doolee song and the Ubbi-Dubbi madrigal. You'll also remember the address to send your stuff to. (Zoom, Box 350, Boston Mass, OH-two-ONE-three-FOUR.) Hope this brings back some fun memories for you!

Strawberry Shortcake's Country Jamboree

This one was requested by one of my readers a few months ago, and I just recently snagged a copy. This is a fun little story with some cute songs. I think the thing I like best though is the overly dramatic narrator that sounds like he's trying to be Jon Lovitz! Yogi Bear: How to Be a Better-Than-the Average Child Without Really Trying

Here's a great contribution from a reader identified as "Kids Music Fan from Boston". It's an album of safety songs starring Yogi Bear, Boo Boo, and Cindy Bear. There's a lot of neat catchy stuff here. I don't think this is Daws Butler voicing Yogi though. I could be wrong here, but the voice of Yogi sounds an awful lot like Stan Freberg to me. I had heard somewhere that he had done voice work on some of these records, but I have no proof that this is him here. What do you guys think? Whoever it is did a really good job with Yogi's vocal mannerisms. Boo Boo and Cindy don't fare quite as well though.

As a bonus, the album includes the theme songs to Top Cat, Touche Turtle, and other cartoons. I like these because they're extended versions of the theme songs we're familiar with. Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy this. Thanks again Kids Music Fan from Boston!

Songs and Stories About the Justice League of America

And now to round out the trilogy(?) of Tifton's DC hero albums, here's "Songs and Stories About the Justice League of America", donated to the blog by "Herr Anonymous". It contains a rousing song about the Justice League ("Are you ready?" "YEAH!" "Are you with it?" "YEAH!") and a song and story each for Wonder Woman, Plastic Man, Metamorpho, Aquaman, and the Flash. Has this group (including Superman and Batman who make the roll call but are otherwise not represented here) ever been the lineup for the Justice League?? There's lots of neat stuff here with toe-tapping tunes and fun stories.

I think one of my favorite odd things is in the Aquaman story. Two sailors are talking in a lighthouse on a far-off island. They hear on the radio that their supply ship has mysteriously disappeared. Suddenly Aquaman and Mera are there talking to them. They talk for a little while and then just as suddenly Hydro (the villain of our piece) shows up. They never explain how they just seem to appear out of nowhere. I guess they didn't have time to explain that part!

According to my source, this is actually a combination of the Tifton Records album and the later released Power Records version. Hope you guys enjoy this. Thanks again, Herr Anonymous!!

Children's Treasury of Batman Musical Stories

Here's the perfect companion to the Superman Musical Stories album I shared earlier. This one features two songs each for Batman, Robin, the Joker, the Penguin, and the Batmobile. The record credits the group "The Merriettes" as the artist on these songs. Anybody here familiar with them? Here's another question. On the song "Ho Ho Ho the Joker's Wild", is it just me or does the intro sound exactly like the theme to Casper the Friendly Ghost? And if so, why??

The Chipmunks Sing with Children

This is the album I meant to put on here after the Busy Beavers album. I like the Chipmunks and have a number of their old albums, but I had not heard of this out-of-print one from 1965 until recently. It was an interesting experiment, mixing the sped-up voices of Alvin, Simon, and Theodore with a children's chorus (the Jimmy Joyce Singers), but it's a nice change. And you can tell that the budget allowed for a more up to date collection of songs used here as well. Hope you like it!

Let's All Sing with the Busy Beavers

Continuing with the squeaky voiced rodent theme, here's the Busy Beavers. I don't think I remember these guys. This record's OK, but you can tell by the song selection it was pretty low budget. The only somewhat creative bit is when they sing part of "Polly Wolly Doodle" in Pig Latin. ("What's Pig Latin?" "Aww, go ask your Mom!") This does have the adult figure leading them (like David Seville), but they seem too well-behaved to need it. Anyway, this one's still pretty fun. Next, I'll have an album from the guys who did it best. Meanwhile...

The Happy Hamsters Go Ghostbustin'

This one's just indescribably goofy. It stars the Happy Hamsters, another Chipmunks knock-off. If you'll notice by looking at the track list, half of these songs are instrumentals from movies. In those, the Happy Hamsters pretend that they are in the movie in question. The jokes aren't very good. For example, here's one from "Imperial March": "We've got to find Luke and the rebels!" "Who are they?" "A punk band from Queens." HAHAHAHAHAHA...WHA???

Anyway, this does have its own bizarre charm, so I hope you enjoy it!

The Amazing Adventures of Pac-Man

I'm sick at home today, so I figured it would be a good time to throw another album on here for you. Here's a crazy one that came out in 1980 featuring Pac-Man. I don't know what to say about this, other than it's just plain nuts! For example, see that rat on the front cover? He knows where the ghosts are hiding, and wants to make a trade with Pac-Man for the information. Pac-Man trades his name, so the rat can now be known as (wait for it) Pac-Rat! They don't discuss whether that makes Pac-Man just "Man" now. I wished this record was in a little better shape, but I cleaned it up as best I could. Anyway, take a listen to this one. Irritating voices, annoying songs, and confusing story; sounds like Way Out Junk to me!

It's Honeymooners Time

Hi, I'm back again with another fun album for you. This 1985 record was put together by the Honeymooners fan club called R.A.L.P.H. (The Royal Association for the Longevity and Preservation of "The Honeymooners"). It compiles some old songs performed by Art Carney (one in character as Ed Norton), Jackie Gleason, and even a Stan Freberg parody. It also has two new songs: "I Want a Wife Like Alice Kramden" and the R.A.L.P.H. theme song "It's Honeymooners Time". Hope you like it!

Edgar Bergen: Laugh and Learn! Lessons in Ventriloquism

Hello again! Sorry about the delay in getting a new album here for you. Between having family staying at our house for the holidays, scrambling to find a new file host, and beginning to transfer old files over before the current ones disappear, it's been pretty hectic!

Anyway, this features Edgar Bergen and his buddies Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. In it Bergen gives tips on learning to talk without moving your lips, throwing your voice, and on the kind of material to use for your act. This is a neat old record, and I hope you like it!

(And I apologize for the condition of the album cover. I haven't learned how to edit my pictures yet, and I wanted to get some more stuff on here before you guys gave up on me!)

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (Thanks Leland!)

I'd like to thank Leland for contributing this album to the blog. Apparently there was never an official release to this soundtrack when the movie came out. This is actually from a special 10th Anniversary edition that was limited to 20,000 CDs. The album is a combination of songs, incidental music, and dialogue from the movie. I do want to warn you about some language cautions on the dialogue, though. But if you've seen the movie, you should know what to expect. My Very Favorite-ist Christmas Card Ever!

I picked up this Christmas card probably around 30 years ago, and it remains my favorite even after all these years. Even though it's an old joke, it still makes me laugh. I think one of the things that makes this card work for me is the art style. I don't know how to describe it (I'm sure one of you more artfully inclined can), but it's just very Christmassy to me. A couple of years later I saw this very same joke on a card done with simple line art, but I just didn't find it anywhere near as effective or funny.

And the best part about this card? It actually folds out to make one long picture! (If you click on each of the pictures it'll make them bigger and you can catch more of the detail.)

I'm hoping to get at least one more Christmas album on here before it's too late but if not I hope all of you have a Merry Christmas. Or a Chappy Chanukah! Or a Kooky Kwanzah! Or a Rockin' Ramadan! Or if you don't celebrate any of the above, Enjoy All the After-Holiday Sales!!

This one's all right, but it's just not chaotic enough. They definitely needed a David Seville type character for them to play off of. During one of the songs one asks, "What are you getting for Christmas?" and another says, "I don't know. I haven't been very good." Even then, he doesn't sound very mischievous. They do, however, get bonus points for not actually performing "The Chipmunk Song" on this album. Anyway, it's silly, it's cheesy, it's (hopefully) still a good link, and I hope you enjoy it!

Underdog Movie Poster

You know, this movie (a live-action remake of the 60's cartoon) is probably going to be awful, but I love the poster for it!

The Way Out Junk-mas Contest is OVAH!!! (Updated with some album links!)

The Contest is finished, and I'd like to thank our seven entrants for participating. We actually had a three-way tie (of seven correct answers) for First Place. While I originally said that there'd be a drawing in case of a tie, I decided to just award the prize to all three winners. So congratulations to our winners, Steve, Rob, and Tom! 12 Drummers Drumming: Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm (from the 1965 album "Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Singing Songs of Christmas"). This was one of the albums I got in that big haul a few months ago. Despite the fact that my HB links have been taken down, I'm going to try to make this available soon (I now have, and the link to it is here.)

11 Pipers Peeping: The Chipmunks (from the album "Christmas with the Chipmunks Vol. 2"). On most of these I tried to take the piece from the twelfth verse, but this one was an exception. This was from the 11th verse breakdown, where they just kept messing up until Dave got them back into it. I was hoping this would help differentiate it from the other high-pitched choices.)

10 Thousand Yards: The Dallas Cowboys, specifically Tony Dorsett (from the 1985 album "A Dallas Cowboys Christmas"). Dorsett had just recently achieved a record 10,000 rushing yards (only the fifth NFL player at the time to have done so). I knew this would be a tough one. 9 Ladies Dancing: Woody the Woodchuck (from the album "Christmas with Woody the Woodchuck"). Steve was the only one who guessed this one correctly. This album is available here at A Christmas Yuleblog.

8 Reindeer Flying: The Care Bears (from the CD "Holiday Hugs"). I just bought this one a month or two ago, so I thought one of you guys would have gotten it. No one did though.

7 Dogs A-Logging: Ren and Stimpy (The song "The Twelve Days of Yaksmas" from the 1993 album "Crock O' Christmas"). This one's out of print, but it's available here at "Ape Shall Never Kill Ape".

6 Cans of Hairspray: Twisted Sister (from the album "Twisted Christmas"). I actually thought this would be one of the harder ones since this CD just came out recently, but everybody got it right.

5 Gold Rings (Ba-dum-bum-bum!): Miss Piggy and the Muppets (from "John Denver and the Muppets: A Christmas Together"). I knew you'd all get that one, but I felt like it had to be included!

4 Thousand Volts: The Cryptkeeper (The song "The Twelve Days of Cryptmas" from the 1994 album "Have Yourself a Scary Little Christmas"). This is one of my favorite warped Christmas albums. It's out of print so, if it's not being offered anywhere else, I'm gonna have it here. And here it is!

3 Candles I Should Light: The Smurfs (from the 1983 album "Merry Christmas from the Smurfs").

2 Turtle Doves: Tennessee Ernie Ford (That wonderfully deep voice is from his 1965 album "Sing We Now of Christmas")

It's Contest Time! [CONTEST IS OVER]

Presenting "The Twelve Days of Way Out Junk-mas" Contest!

Here's the deal:

At the end of this entry you will find a file. Download and listen to the file. What you will hear is the last verse of the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas". However, the intro and each one of the numbered gifts is from a different version of the song (or a parody of it). Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to tell me the artists of each of these parts. Now I'm looking for the artist, group, or characters credited on the song. For example, if one piece has Moe from the Three Stooges, just saying the Three Stooges is fine. If Bugs Bunny sings one, you'd say Bugs Bunny, not Mel Blanc. When you have your guess ready, email it to me at wayoutjunk@gmail.com (Do NOT send it as a comment on the board! Email only!! In fact, to alleviate anybody getting overly excited on the guessing, I will set the comments to be moderated by me just in case.) Please make as the subject "Twelve Days Contest" or something similar to that, so I'll know that's what the email is about. You'll have to guess who does the Intro all the way down to number one (and when you enter, please number and answer them in that order). And whoever gets the most answers right without going over wins the prize! (Sorry, I went into Bob Barker mode there for a second. Hey, he's retiring, so maybe I can get his job! "Help control the population. Have your kids spayed or neutered." No, wait. That's not right.....)

What will the winner receive? A copy of all the music currently available on this site in handy-dandy mp3 form, and maybe a few musical surprises as well! I think you guys should be able to get at least half of these without breaking a sweat. That said, I really don't believe anybody here will get every one of them. However, you're a pretty sharp group so you may surprise me. (I know the question you all have: Will the files that have been recently removed be included on the CDs? My official answer is No. Interpret that however you choose.)

Hear Santa Coming to Your House! (if your name is Jennifer, that is...)

I know absolutely nothing about this record. Even the label (if it had one) is gone. It's one of those records that you would buy that would mention your child's name, but boy howdy they didn't go to much expense or trouble here. You hear Santa Ho-Ho-Ho-ing and talking about Christmas and how wonderful everything is while he's making his rounds. Then he asks whose chimney he's come to, and some lady that they probably just grabbed out of the office says, "Jennifer's chimney, Santa Claus." Then Santa replies, "Oh yes, Merry Christmas to you!" and goes on Ho-Ho-Ho-ing and wishing you a Merry Christmas again. And that's it! First of all, I didn't think Santa took on elves as riders on his annual trip. Secondly, isn't Santa supposed to know which house he's come to, without having some unimpressed elf telling him? I think I would know i got ripped off even if I was little Jennifer! Anyway, I figured you guys would appreciate the pure cheesiness of it, despite the fact that it's not in best shape. Enjoy!

Children's Treasury of Superman Musical Stories

I just had to share this album with you, especially since it ties in so well with yesterday's entry. This album from 1966 features a bunch of fun songs about Superman and his cast of characters. There's two each for Superman, Lois, Jimmy, Superboy, Krypto, and Mr. Mxyptlk. What's fun is that a lot of these songs are supposedly sung by the characters themselves. For example, in the song "Lois Lane", the singer says, "I'll do it, I'll do it, I'll keep her in line even if it means changing her name to mine or my name isn't Superman!" And if you were hoping for a definitive pronunciation of the name Mxyptlk, you won't get it here. When Mxyptlk himself says it, it sounds like a cross between a chicken and the Tasmanian Devil! By the way, I've heard that there's supposedly another album of this vintage of Justice League songs. I've seen one from the 70's but not this one. Anybody here heard of it?

A company called Onar Films is supposed to be putting this movie out on DVD later this year. Unfortunately all their stuff is in PAL format, so it wouldn't work here in the United States. I hope you enjoy this little snippet of it!

Zero Mostel Reads "How the Grinch Stole Christmas"

Hey, it's my first Christmas album for the blog! I don't have a whole lot of Christmas albums that aren't either still in print or available elsewhere, so I'm going to have to spread them out a bit.

This is a pretty neat album from 1975. Side 1 is Zero Mostel reading "How the Grinch Stole Christmas". Mostel starts out pretty calm, but after a while he just goes nuts! I think this is the first Grinch I've heard that just sounds out-and-out insane!! Side 2 is a number of Christmas songs from around the world (sung in English) by a man named Alan Mills. I don't know him, but he has a definite Burl Ives-ish quality about him. I hope you guys like this!

Kaptain Kool and the Kongs

Here's another odd one for you. Do you remember "The Krofft Supershow"? Well, the hosts of the show were a group called "Kaptain Kool and the Kongs". When I bought this record from eBay (still sealed), I was hoping it was going to be songs from the group. Actually, it's a couple of skits from them, as well as audio recordings of stories from episodes (with minimal narration). Unfortunately this was a bit later in the show's run so, while we still get a Wonderbug story, there's no Dr. Shrinker or Electra Woman and Dyna Girl tales. Instead, we get Magic Mongo (oog!) and Big Foot and Wild Boy. It's funny, but with the amateurish recording and grainy, out-of-focus picture, you'd almost think this album was a bootleg, but it's got the Peter Pan Records logo on it, so it must be legit. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it!

Hi! Here's a fun little Thanksgiving record from 1975 that I got at the Library's book sale. This has lots of traditional songs with the words changed to make them Thanksgiving related. ("It's Thanksgiving" to "O Susannah", "I'm a Poor Little Cranberry Bush" to "In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree", etc.) Yeah, it's pretty silly, but how many Thanksgiving kids records ARE there?? The Talking Record for Girls

I'm not sure if this is useful or kind of creepy. This record was meant to be played by little girls to assist them in "thinking and speaking". It starts out with a friendly woman's voice saying, "Hello, I'm Rosemary, your talking record." and she goes on by asking questions and leaving spaces in between for the child to answer. I'm not quite sure when this record came out, but judging by the pictures I'm guessing possibly late 50's-early 60's. Therefore there's a lot of talk asking about how many dolls the child has and which one's her favorite. Rosemary also throws in a few poems and songs to liven things up a bit. I read there's a "Talking Record for Boys" as well. I assume they talk about playing Cowboys and Indians and collecting Army Men or something. Anyway, hope you like this!

Shari Lewis: Hi Kids!

Well, kids, let's soldier on and hope for the best...

This album from 1959 or 1960 (depending on whether you believe the album cover or the record itself) features famed ventriloquist Shari Lewis and her puppets Lamb Chop, Charley Horse, Hush Puppy, and Wing Ding singing a number of fun songs. Now the disadvantage of having a ventriloquist do an album is that without the visual of the puppets you start to notice similarities in the voices. The advantage, of course, is that you can have everybody singing at the same time! One good thing here is that Lewis really does have a nice singing voice. She can really swing through some of these songs! One bad thing is the rather un-PC "All God's Chillun Got Rhythm". Anyway, this is a neat album, and I hope it stays here long enough for you to enjoy it!

Oh yeah, quick trivia tidbit: Did you know that Shari Lewis (along with her husband) actually wrote the Classic Star Trek episode "The Lights of Zetar"?

James Blonde: The Man from T.A.N.T.E.

Well, I'd hoped to get this one on to coincide with the opening of "Casino Royale", but I'm a bit late on it. Since a number of articles were referring to Daniel Craig as "James Blonde", I figured this would be a perfect fit!

My Dad bought this for us when we were kids. I'm not really sure why because it's not really a kids record. This album (copyrighted 1965 but I know we got it a few years later) has James Bond (excuse me, Blonde) as the Man from T.A.N.T.E. (To Annihilate No-good Troublemakers Etc.) going up against Dr. Nu? and Goldflaker from T.R.A.F.E. (Terrible Rotten And Filthy Enemies). This comedy album is loaded with Jewish references, which might temper how many of the jokes you get. As I kid, I just liked the funny voices. As a number of articles talking about this record point out, this album cast M as a woman long before the movies did. However, in this case M stands for James Blonde's Mama who insists on calling him Jake. ("You may be James to the world, sonny boy, but to your mother you will always be Jake!") This definitely qualifies as Way Out Junk! I hope you enjoy it, and for those of you who want more kids albums, don't worry. I've got three or four of them I'm working on right now!

"Welcome to the LBJ Ranch!" : The Robin-Doud Comedy Interviews

I actually like this one better than "Washington Is for the Birds". Instead of putting their voices to song (which, while funny, is a bit forced), this album does fake interviews using the politicians' real voices. Sort of like what Dickie Goodman did in songs like "The Flying Saucer", where he took pieces of popular songs and put them in an interview format with humorous results. Even if you aren't familiar with the politicians and what they did, this is very funny. And if you don't like it, in the words of Lady Bird Johnson, "That's all right."

Washington Is for the Birds

Considering Election Day is Tuesday, I thought I'd throw a few political albums on here for you. But this being Way Out Junk, you can count on it not getting too deep. This album from 1966 features the voices of then President Lyndon Johnson, his wife Lady Bird, Vice President Hubert Humphrey, and a number of other political figures of the day. The catch here is that their voices are set to music. We're not talking about stirring patriotic music behind inspirational speeches. No, we've got sound bites that are somehow made into songs. It's terribly silly, but would you expect anything less from me?

Groovie Goolies Rarities (A Very Special Contribution)

This is a bit of a late Halloween gift to you guys, but hopefully I will be forgiven under the circumstances. Remember a few posts ago when I said I was in a good mood because I got back in touch with a friend of mine that I hadn't heard from in a while? Well, that friend happens to be Mondo Daddykin, late of the Mondo Daddykin blog (a huge inspiration for the blog you see here)! (By the way, he's doing fine. Panic: The Son of Shock

This odd record from 1959 was a sequel to the album "Shock". I don't have that one, but I was going to find somebody that did and link to it here. Anyway, this album from the Creed Taylor Orchestra features strange instrumental bits (some with a little talking as well) of some unusual and scary situations. The back cover has a story for each song, so I've included a copy of the back cover above (as well as on the uploaded zip file) to give you a bit of an idea on what's going on here. I apologize that the back cover didn't really print well here. If you click on the picture it gets bigger, and (with Firefox at least) a magnifying glass comes up that blows it up even bigger. I really don't know what else to tell you here, other than to download it and enjoy, remembering that the name of this blog is "Way Out Stuff" and I think this fits the bill!

The Smurfs All Star Show

I wasn't sure I had this other Smurf album from 1981, but it turns out that I do! I think I bought it at a later date, because I didn't remember listening to this one. I don't like this one quite as much as "Smurfing Sing Song" because they use more traditional songs here. It's still pretty neat if you want to get your Smurf on though! Hope you like it!

Flipper's New Adventure

This record was released shortly after the movie came out in 1964 and is a sort of retelling of the movie itself. It stars Luke Halpin as Sandy, who also played the part in the movie and the subsequent series that came out that fall. However, none of the other roles are played by the original cast. Most of the roles are played by the Speed Racer voice artists, as well as Jackson Beck and Dick Van Patten. As far as Flipper himself, I don't think he bothered to come to the studio because they use variations of the same two second clip of him chattering all through the record!

One neat thing is that this is part of the Stereo Motion series of children's stories, which means that according to the back album cover, "you can hear Flipper splash and chatter as he swims from wave to wave. You can also hear airplanes pass overhead, and motor boats roar from left to right." It ain't as cool as Dolby Surround, but hey, it's not bad for 1964! Enjoy!

Here's an odd little album from 1958 that I picked up at the Library's book sale. You know, your kid's destined to be spoiled if you call him Little Johnny Everything. Although apparently his sister is named Judy Everything. What nationality would the surname "Everything" be?

Anyway, here's some cute kids songs that I don't think I've heard anywhere else (except for the song "My How You've Grown" that I'm pretty sure I saw puppets performing to on "Captain Kangaroo"). There's even a couple of Christmas songs that you can hold off listening to for a couple months if you feel like it. Enjoy!
